Capitalism Hits the Fan

I'm linking here to an article that has the most succinct and accurate summation of the real cause of our current financial crisis that I have seen. Capitalism Hits the Fan by Richard Wolff, professor of economics at the University of Massachusetts.

Throughout the article, point-for-point, I agree with his reasoning and support his conclusions.

At the end of the article he has also included the solution. I think his solution would work, however, it is radical enough where I do not see the U.S. government enacting it. At least not until things have gotten much, much worse.

So, ya, we're pretty much screwed.

Benjamin Button Just a Rehashed Forrest Gump?

Did Eric Roth, the writer of the screenplay for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, take his previous screenplay for Forrest Gump and pretty much just rehash the story and characters?

Just watch the video below to see a point-for-point comparison of the two movies.

It's not exactly plagiarism, especially since the same guy wrote both screenplays, but still...

Hey, You Got Peanut Butter In My Salmonella

Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich

With the recent salmonella contamination of King Nut peanut butter in the news, the folks over at Scientific American are asking, and answering the question: How does salmonella get into peanut butter? And can you kill it once it's there?

In the article the expert they talk to explains all about salmonella and how it can contaminate food.

But the only explanation he gives for how it could have gotten into the peanut butter is that roof water may have leaked into it.

Roof water? Seriously? How the hell does a food processing plant have roof water leaking into its food vats? Nobody noticed that the roof was leaking into the food? Really? Doesn't sound possible to me. Could everyone in that plant be that incompetent? The owners, managers, supervisors and workers? ALL of them didn't notice that the roof was leaking into the peanut butter?

Anyway, that's just a possibility. Another, more plausible (I hope) explanation comes from Phillis Entis over at eFoodAlert. She's talking about a previous contamination in 2007, and it would still require some incompetence to happen, but at least not the glaring incompetence of not noticing a roof leaking into the peanut butter.

also, CNN reports Kellogg's Austin and Keebler peanut butter crackers may be tainted. So, for now, don't eat those. You shouldn't be eating those things anyway. Eat an apple instead.

Obama Chooses Vilsack For Agriculture Secretary

Agriculture

Barack Obama's choice of former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack for secretary of agriculture has had mixed reactions. Over at Salon and The Huffington Post they're pointing out his support of biotechnology, biofuels and Big Agribusiness and how environmentalists are not at all pleased with his appointment.

But an article over at NPR points out his record of balancing competing interests and his support of small and family farms.

My guess is the reality, as usual, will probably be more-of-the-same with no major changes in ag policy.
