Hey, You Got Peanut Butter In My Salmonella

With the recent salmonella contamination of King Nut peanut butter in the news, the folks over at Scientific American are asking, and answering the question: How does salmonella get into peanut butter? And can you kill it once it's there?

In the article the expert they talk to explains all about salmonella and how it can contaminate food.

But the only explanation he gives for how it could have gotten into the peanut butter is that roof water may have leaked into it.

Roof water? Seriously? How the hell does a food processing plant have roof water leaking into its food vats? Nobody noticed that the roof was leaking into the food? Really? Doesn't sound possible to me. Could everyone in that plant be that incompetent? The owners, managers, supervisors and workers? ALL of them didn't notice that the roof was leaking into the peanut butter?

Anyway, that's just a possibility. Another, more plausible (I hope) explanation comes from Phillis Entis over at eFoodAlert. She's talking about a previous contamination in 2007, and it would still require some incompetence to happen, but at least not the glaring incompetence of not noticing a roof leaking into the peanut butter.

also, CNN reports Kellogg's Austin and Keebler peanut butter crackers may be tainted. So, for now, don't eat those. You shouldn't be eating those things anyway. Eat an apple instead.
